IoT Evolution Expo 2016 Recap

IoT Evolution Expo invaded Las Vegas this week by taking over Caesars Palace. The conference focus was to be a premier source of information needed to help drive your enterprise forward with the latest in IoT applications. A few of the tracks found this year at IoT Evolution included IoT Security, Fog Computing and IoT Enterprise. Overall this expo gave attendees the chance to listen to various talks and panel discussions, as well as hands-on demos on the exhibitor floor, and evening networking nights with industry experts and peers. Here are some of the posts during the event: Diving into the IoT Evolution sessions, we learn the weakness of our smartphone. Godfrey Chua, analyst at Machina Research, informs us that the smartphone can be a very weak link in IoT and M2M communications when it is used as a remote control. And…IoT Evolution continued with more panel discussions. Yann Kulp, VP SmartSpace North America with Schneider Electric tells us that, the panel with GE, Amazon, US Celluar and Argus Insights offered intriguing updates with the use of Wiser Air in your home and other Wi-Fi IoT applications. FreeWave was fortunate to participate this year on both the Oil and Gas: Pirates and Protection, as well as the Brown Field Round Table: What to do when it’s too late to start again panel discussions. The Pirates and Protection panel give us all a chance to dive deeper into the critical industries and what IoT secure options area available for these remote locations. My second panel of the night with the Brown Field Round Table gave attendees to hear real world case study examples of Sensor-2-Server implementation challenges with blending older SCADA systems with the latest IoT solutions for continuous real-time results.  Time to see an IoT application at work! James Brehm & Associates tried their hand at capturing this IoT conference with virtual reality technology. A new solution from RICOH THETA. The 360 angle is best viewed prior to hitting up Margaritaville. Interesting to see the “Workspaces & IoT” concept discussed as well. Digital workspaces takes center stage at IoT Evolution as Global Workspace Analytics reports 3.7 million U.S. employees now work from home. Cynthia Artin with IoT Evolution informs us that,”while the IoT is arguably taking off faster in more industrial domains (factories, farms, transportation), and has the most “sizzle” in consumer domains (smart homes, smart cars, fitness wearables), there is new energy forming around IoT enhanced offices.” Now as this year’s IoT conference comes to a close, we remember all the ways IoT will change our enterprise and our life this year. One thing is clear, the more we innovate, the more we strive to become more efficient, automated and safety operated within fog computing and cloud applications. The Next 30 Years of IT

At Interop Las Vegas back in May, InformationWeek Executive Editor Curtis Franklin sat down with Senior Editor Sara Peters about how IoT is changing everything we know in IT, especially in the industrial enterprise. From predictive analytics, to security, to ROI, see why Franklin and Peters view the next 30 years of IT starts with IoT. Here are some key trends and considerations worth noting: We’re starting to see a clear division between the consumer and industrial markets as far as the evolution of IoT. The Industrial IoT (IIoT) space looks to be growing, developing and maturing at a faster rate than the consumer IoT space. The concept of predictive maintenance and advanced analytics is where a lot of innovation and excitement is happening for a few reasons: The end-to-end enterprise IT toolchain is now being viewed holistically, looking at how data and information travels from the sensors at the edge of the network, through the different networking and communication modalities and all the way back to the big data analytics engines at the core network (further reading: Sensor-2-Server). As a result of the new intelligence and operational efficiencies that are being realized, companies are seeing hard dollar returns which provide the capital to make new investments in these emerging technologies Security is a legitimate concern and while the pace of innovation might be slowing the adoption or rollout of new IoT technologies, vendors and service providers recognize the importance of the security paradigm and are building encryption and authentication into their systems. Interoperability of networks – are they being taken for granted? Perhaps there is even more on the horizon as far as how different technologies and networks integrate. The progression of new RF standards has been slower than most expected; will it pickup from here? The answer is most definitely and through ubiquitous networking and other advancements with RF and digital engineering, we will see innovations in the application layer of networks over the next five years that we can only dream about today.  

IIoT Top News: Machine Learning

Machine-to-machine (M2M) learning is an integral apart of the expanding world of Industrial IoT. Over the past few months we have given attention to manufacturing and its current digital disruption, but have failed to show the direct impact smart M2M and IoT technology is having on the industry. So, this week we are diving deeper into the term machine learning and how it connects to manufacturing both today and in the future. Before we get to our news round up let’s start by re-defining M2M, to ensure we are all on the same page with its purpose and meaning. Gartner has defined machine-2-machine communications as “something used for automated data transmission and measurement between mechanical or electronic devices.” Now, that we have defined M2M, its time to check out our top news round up for the week on how M2M applies to both manufacturing and IoT. 10 ways machine learning is revolutionizing manufacturing Machine learning is poised to improve manufacturing by streamlining the process of OT and IT, thus increasing efficiency and lowering overall operation costs. Louis Columbus at Forbes believes that “Every manufacturer has the potential to integrate machine learning into their operations and become more competitive by gaining predictive insights into production.”   IoT will recharge Machine Manufacturers Manufacturing can look to software companies as an example of how IoT can implement creating a smarter M2M network. Timothy Chou with CFO.com writes, “Today, manufacturers of machines — whether seed drills, chillers, or CT scanners — can leverage the path paved by the software product companies through three new business models: service and support; assisted services and machine-as-a-service.”   Climbing the IoT Mountain–by adding M2M to manufacturing Manufacturing is only at the beginning of its ascent into IoT and M2M, so there are many more bumps and obstacles a long the way for the industry to fully integrate. Ronnie Garrett with Supply & Demand Chain Executive describes IoT and M2M manufacturing implementation as, “Standing at the foot of Mount Everest, ready to climb the world’s tallest mountain. You know you want to get to the top but you aren’t really sure how you will get there or what obstacles you’ll encounter along the way.”   Cybersecurity is manufacturing’s biggest risk factor Manufacturing needs to continue to add M2M automation and big data analytics to the shop floor, but a threat to the overall industry is manifesting itself in the cybersecurity world. Ian Wright with Engineering.com informs writes, “A new report from BDO indicates that 92 percent of manufacturers cited cybersecurity concerns in their SEC disclosures this year. According to BDO, this represents a 44 percent increase compared to the first Manufacturing Risk Factor report in 2013.”   As we wrap up our top news for the week, we realize the need to fully implement advanced machine learning across the manufacturing world will take more than a simple flick of the wrist. With that said, we leave you with a cautionary tale of when automation goes wrong. It was recently discovered an airport in India had an sign translated with automation software which read, “eating carpet strictly prohibited” — of course this was not the translation they had meant to display. Regardless, as we move towards a fully integrated M2M world, we will have to adjust our equations depending our our intended outcome, much like the world is finding with the love/hate of language automation. Fog Computing: Answering the IoT Challenge

Fog Computing is being touted as the data communication solution our Internet of Things (IoT) devices are asking for by bringing the power of cloud computing closer to the end user. The fact is, the number of connected devices is going to continue to grow exponentionally. In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2020 IoT will include 26 billion connected things. Consider the impact that amount of data collected and processed will have.   The Challenge Naturally, with billions of devices all connected to the cloud for manufacturing, oil and gas, utilities, municipalities and enterprise, to name a few, the data transmission and processing rate is bound to slow down – especially if the current cloud architecture is upheld. Some IoT devices use the cloud to store data long term, where other connected things send data to the cloud to be analyzed and sent back to the devicewith operational instructions. Ahmed Banafa with SemiWiki explains, “As dependence on our newly connected devices increases along with the benefits and uses of a maturing technology, the reliability of the gateways that make the IoT a functional reality must increase and make up-time a near guarantee.”   What is Fog Computing? Fog Computing is a term coined by Cisco, that offers a way to analyze the data closer to the IoT device, thus saving valuable milliseconds. It may be hard to believe, but a millisecond has the power to prevent a M2M line shut-down, increase the speed at which power is restored to utilities and prevent an oil rig from leaking, just to name a few. An easy way to visually understand where Fog Computing fits in our IoT world, is by looking at the diagram above. It clearly shows that Fog Computing hangs between the cloud and the device, much like the fog on an early San Francisco morning. Fog Computing operates at the network edge, extending the cloud capabilities closer to the source (IoT device). Each IoT connection works with what’s called Fog Nodes to digest the intelligent data and then coordinate operational next steps, whether that be acting directly and or transmitting results to the cloud. The diagram below covers the types of response times IoT devices face from both Fog Nodes and main cloud locations.   Fog Computing Brings Efficiency to Enterprise A recent report by Machina Research highlights the companies that pioneered Fog Computing and those poised to capitalize on the benefits in their near future. These companies are able to collect, protect, transport and control the data via IoT devices at the edge of the network, saving time and creating a more stream-line approach to sending and receiving data efficiently and more securely. Overall, as our need to connect explodes, we will not only need to think about IoT, but also the way in which intelligent data is processed from the critical infrastructure and back to the cloud. Fog Computing will continue to open more efficient channels across our IoT, as long as we allow it.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is essential for both enterprise and personal, everyday use. Leading research firms agree that IoT will experience an unbelievable boom, possibly into the tens of billion devices by 2020 as computers, smartphones and sensors all require connectivity. This week’s Things Expo is a SYS-CON Media annual event, designed to help make sure your enterprise is IoT-ready with 80 breakout sessions focusing on many aspects of IoT, including big data’s use with predictive analytics, smart grid and Industrial IoT (IIoT), wearables, identity in IoT and modem data centers, among many other tracks. Data Drought: Rural Australian Wi-Fi

Data drought in the rural Australian outback has illuminated the myriad problems stemming from a lack of Wi-Fi connectivity. Precision agriculture today requires broadband and high-speed connectivity to compete in the innovative global marketplace. Yet, many rural areas lack the sufficient infrastructure needed, offering only spotty or basic wireless internet solutions. In fact, there are a total of 135,000 Austrian farms over 400 million hectares, that create enough food to feed 80 million people, representing 13 percent of the country’s total export revenue. With that in mind, Australia can no long afford to ignore the demand to increase farming innovation, and so it has begun to look at possible solutions for the geographically complicated continent. A recent FaceBook survey conducted by the Better Internet for Rural, Regional and Remote Australia (BIRRR) found that 88 percent of Australians feel they don’t have services to meet all of their needs. Many living in the rural areas have voiced concerns over the noticeable “data drought,” but these concerns were often thought as a one-off individual problem. The BIRRR results have helped to bring to light just how massive this data drought issue is to farmers and others living in the rural areas of the country. Living in the bush has proven hard to find reliable ways to connect even basic Wi-Fi long enough for remote education, banking and innovative agriculture tools. It’s not for a lack of trying, as nearly every farmer has at least one smartphone. Many have been forced back to the city, even just to rent office space, so they are able to conduct business and digital transactions without interruptions. Is there a solution? The National Broadband Network (NBN) launched satellite Sky Muster, earlier this year with an expected customer capacity of 240,000. Farmers lucky enough to live in range of this satellite are  starting to see the benefits of real broadband connectivity. A second satellite is expected to launch later this year with the hope of reducing the data drought across the remote areas of the nation. Another possible solution has been presented by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who believes mobile technology is key to improving the agriculture and living conditions in the outback. Turnbull has promised to spend 60 million to improve mobile black spots in regional, rural and remote Australia. The AgForce vice-president and committee chair, Georgie Somerset recently said that the “increased investment in fixed wireless roll-out would also enable local Wi-Fi platforms, that can then support businesses and education in rural Queensland with high-speed reliable and affordable data.” It is important to note that, today’s IIoT technology marketplace has begun to produce exciting new solutions to address remote wi-fi needs similar to the challenges being faced in Australia today. The steps Australia takes to find a suitable solution to its connectivity problems can set the stage for solving similar challengs in remote areas across the globe.

IoT Top News: M2M Propels Machines

Time and again, those keeping a pulse on the Internet of Things (IoT) space frequently hear about the “rise of the machines.” Humanity is not only discovering fascinating ways to integrate machines into our daily lives, but also finding new uses for machines as well. How? Machines are now “internet-connected” just like the smartphones we carry around in our pockets. And this isn’t just on the commercial side with the likes of smart thermostats or connected vehicles – even tractors and oil and gas machinery are industrial examples of where new “things” are now on the digital network. In fact, there are more M2M or “machine-to-machine” communication devices on this planet than humans. As GSMA Intelligence reported in 2014, there are 7.2bn M2M devices versus 7.19bn humans. Stuart Taylor from Cisco also wrote a prediction that “The Internet of Things (IoT) is a world where up to 50 billion things (or devices) will be connected to the Internet by 2020; or, the equivalent of 6 devices for every person on the planet.” Realizing the major role M2M devices continue to have in our connected world, specifically as it relates to the advent of machine learning, it’s only natural to highlight the impact of machines and M2M in the past, present and future. The Machines are Coming: How M2M Spawned the Internet of Things In the digital world, M2M wireless solutions will work for us quietly, in the background solving all our day-to-day needs. John Kennedy with Silicon Republic reports that, “M2M is at the heart of the industrial internet of things (IIoT), powering smart factories that can be run remotely from a tablet computer, and smart buildings that monitor their environment and feed data back to the cloud.”   Is Machine Learning Over Hyped? In the now 24-hour news cycle, often the top news lingers around lighter topics. So how much hype should be given to machine learning (ML)? The Huffington Post respondent Scott Aaronson, theoretical computer scientist at MIT, seems to think that “There’s no doubt in my mind that people 30 years from now will agree with us about the central importance of ML, but which aspects of ML will they rage at us for ignoring, or laugh at us for obsessing about when we shouldn’t have?   Machine Learning: Demystifying Linear Regression and Feature Selection Machine learning needs to integrate domain knowledge in order to improve the quality of data collected from analysts. Josh Lewis with Computerworld thinks that, “Business people need to demand more from machine learning so they can connect data scientists’ work to relevant action.”   Machine Learning Examples Crop up for Data Center Management Data centers appear to be the perfect place for enterprises to implement machine learning to its fullest. Christopher Yetman, COO at Vantage Data said, “There are also sensors that generate data about air pressure, humidity, temperature and supply voltage and typically feed into a programmable logic controller.”   M2M Technology Driving Agriculture’s Industrialization  On a global front, M2M is driving agriculture’s industrialization in South Africa. Digital Oil: Wireless Means Safety & Efficiency

Production demands of the 21st-Century change at an extraordinary pace. Industrial markets, such as energy and oil & gas face challenges going forward, including the reliable monitoring of assets in the field, dealing with 24×7 production demands, and managing high costs in terms of both time and resources to manage assets in remote locations. These market forces have naturally led to the emergence of the industrial internet of things (IIoT) and wireless communications technology. If you’re an operator in the field, you’re well aware that wireless IoT technology is changing the level of safety, efficiency and monitoring available on the rigs. Let’s take a moment and look closer at how these changes are impacting the digital oil field of today. Why? The consequences of incidents, such as natural gas pipeline explosions, have contributed to the demand for more safety and monitoring regulations along pipelines. California for example, saw tightened state regulations as a result of the San Bruno disaster, which included more stringent requirements for pipeline monitoring. Across industries such as oil and gas, there are certainly areas with the presence of hazardous gasses and therefore potentially dangerous environments.   Safety First Taking a closer look at safety on an oil field, we realize just how dangerous it can be for people to be on or even near a production site. Advancements in IoT are now more important than ever because they allow more oil and gas companies to enable a digital work environment – not just from an operational perspective, but from a worker health and safety point of view. Safety concerns to be addressed are the elimination of manually painstaking tasks related to checking on-site sensor data or heavy machinery that resides in potentially hazardous environments – for example where explosive gases are present. Safety is now being increased by taking away the pen and pad from the technician and automating wireless remote monitoring capabilities to enter readings, pressures, temperature and other production monitoring values from miles away. Because of this evolution, many technicians have updated their skills in order to provide value in a digital age and the skills gap here is also an emerging issue for energy producers to keep in mind. Jens Norgaard, SafeEx Business Development Director reports that, “There is no doubt that the younger generation…are running around with high tech equipment…and it’s much more sexy using an electronic tool than using pen and paper. Most technicians have taken a technical education because they want to use their hands and are not always very keen on doing administrative work. So if you can reduce the amount of that it will become much more attractive for younger people to do it.”   Highly Efficient and Operational The hope with any advancement in technology is that our world will be able to run and function more smoothly. According to LR Energy’s annual 2015-2016 Oil & Gas Technology Radar survey of global oil and gas executives, “the top driver of innovation investment is operational efficiency.” As wireless IoT solutions continue to infiltrate the oil rigs and pads of today, it is only natural to question the operational and efficiency state of things. Over the next decade technological implementations are expected take more people off the drill floor and into the office allowing companies to fill the knowledge gap with remote drill sites, thus paving the way for more automated oil fields. Pierre Sames, DNV GL director of research and innovation in Norway suggests that, “These technologies will help the industry to be more cost efficient in operations, which is very much needed due to the current oil price crisis.” Keeping Production High with High-Tech Whether you are working with an offshore or onshore rig, the ability to seamlessly monitor and control the operations of a oil rig or well pad automatically from an office location is a key component of IoT and an evolution of the digital oilfield. Natural Gas Intel (NGI) informs us that, “One of the most anticipated technologies, automated drilling in the offshore and onshore, could reduce drilling times and costs by up to one-third versus conventional drilling rigs, ensuring more wells are economically feasible, able to hit smaller targets and generating more infill production.” It seems apparent that we are on the midst of an industrial revolution where blended technology ecosystems are going to be the core of what makes modern energy producers competitive. Just think of the combination that Voice, Video, Sensors and Data can have if applied together in a holistic fashion. “Expectations of fully automated drilling operations, autonomous pipeline inspections and the expanded use of natural gas to fuel trucks and railways are likely to be at the forefront by 2025,” industry consultant DNV GL said last month (see Daily GPI, April 6). By 2025, the energy industry will become increasingly “automated, digital and smarter,” according to DNV’s Technology Outlook 2025. What’s next for the oil and gas industry? Technology and Sales: Enabling Adopters

Most people love new technology. It can make us more productive. It can lower our costs. It can be very “cool.” So, if it’s true and most people love new technology, why do we tend to adopt new technology on a “curve?” Why do innovators and early adopters jump in early while others become late majority or laggards? One answer is the effect of salespeople on the adoption curve. With innovators, salespeople probably make no difference. Innovators are going to buy new technology early and take a risk. It’s important that they are the first to utilize and implement new technology. They probably know more about the technology than the salespeople do anyway. They have likely been researching the new stuff for months and probably were involved in beta-testing the product for the manufacturer. Salespeople make the difference between customers who are early adopters, early majority and late majority adopters. Salespeople need to instill confidence in customers, clearly articulate the benefits vs. risks of implementing new technology, help customers with ROI analysis of implementing the new solutions and convince customers to try the product as a proof source. Left to their own devices, most customers would wait until technology is proven and the cost comes down. That’s a logical argument, but one that is refuted by strong salespeople. Strong salespeople will move customers forward on the adoption curve:  Early Majority to Early Adopters,  Late Majority to Early Majority. Selling Tech If new technology enables capabilities that don’t currently exist, makes people more efficient or can lower your costs—waiting to implement that technology has a cost associated with doing so. By waiting to implement, customers will continue to work without needed capabilities and can be less efficient or can continue accruing costs that could be reduced by implementing the new technology. This is where salespeople earn their keep. It’s up to the salesperson to connect those dots for customers. To understand the objections up front and to help the customer see that while there is some risk in implementing new technology, there is more cost involved in waiting to implement it.  And, as a late majority or laggard, that customer could be at risk of falling behind competitors who have already started implementing the new technology. The key to getting customers to adopt new technology early is validation. Customers need to validate that the new technology will do what the vendor says it will do. This is done through demonstrations, proof of concepts, and pilot installations. The sales team is responsible for getting customers to take those steps. The validation process starts with a presentation to the customer on the new technology: How it works Why it will address the customers’ needs Proof sources of other customers that have already validated the product, etc. Answering in-depth technical questions and objections Clearly articulating the costs/benefits of implementing the new technology The next step is getting the customer to agree that if the product does what it is advertised to do, that they will buy and implement it.  These steps could take anywhere from just days to months to even years. But, an important step has to happen before convincing customers to implement new technology. It’s the step of convincing salespeople that this technology is ready for prime time and is worth pushing customers to become early adopters or early majority participants. The steps for convincing salespeople that this technology is ready is virtually the same as it is for convincing customers. It all starts with training the salespeople. Training Tactics You begin with the background on why the new technology was developed to begin with. This product was designed to do X.  We have validated that the market for a product like this is Y. There are competitors A, B and C in this market and we are bringing competitive advantages over them in these key areas:  uptime, manageability and throughput. The ROI for this product shows a seven month payback. The key application for this product is Z. The market sweetspot for this technology is a customer that has a need for high throughput capability at a cost of <$1500 and has uptime reliability of 99%+. We have already implemented these solutions at four different companies (all early adopters) and those customers are willing to be references for us. The new technology has been working as expected at those customer installations for three months. Once the background of the new technology is presented and understood by the salespeople, it’s time to validate it by proving that the product does what it says. This could be a demonstration or a visit to one of those early adopter customers who already implemented the new technology. Have them ask the customer:  Why they implemented it. How they like it. What differences they are realizing because they implemented the solution. What advice they would give other customers considering implementing the new technology. Now, the salespeople are ready to start influencing customers to buy the new technology. Time to overview the product, get into a pilot to validate that it works and then close the business. Introducing new technology is paramount to long-term growth of a manufacturer. Getting customers to adopt that technology at an accelerated rate is 100% on the sales team and its channel partners. That’s why salespeople and channels exist—to get customers to do things faster than they normally would by showing them the benefits of doing so. In a word—it’s called “selling.” Good selling!

Critical (Outdoor) IoT Applications Need Robust Connectivity

It’s safe to assume that the majority of all Internet of Things (IoT) devices operate near large populations of people. Of course, right? This is where the action happens – smart devices, smart cars, smart infrastructure, smart cities, etc. Plus, the cost of getting “internet-connected” in these areas is relatively low – public access to Wi-Fi is becoming widely available, cellular coverage is blanketed over cities, etc. But what about the devices out in the middle of nowhere? The industrial technology that integrates and communicates with heavy machinery that isn’t always “IP connected,” operating in locations not only hard to reach, but often exposed harsh weather. The fact remains, this is where IoT connectivity is potentially most challenging to enable, but also perhaps the most important to have. Why? Because these numerous assets help deliver the lifeblood for our critical infrastructures – electricity, water, energy, etc. Without these legacy and geographically dispersed machines, a smart world may never exist. But let’s back up for a second and squash any misconceptions about the “industrial” connectivity picture we’re painting above. Take this excerpt from Varun Nagaraj in a past O’Reilly Radar article: “… unlike most consumer IoT scenarios, which involve digital devices that already have IP support built in or that can be IP enabled easily, typical IIoT scenarios involve pre-IP legacy devices. And unfortunately, IP enablement isn’t free. Industrial device owners need a direct economic benefit to justify IP enabling their non-IP devices. Alternatively, they need a way to gain the benefits of IP without giving up their investments in their existing industrial devices — that is, without stranding these valuable industrial assets.
